Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas#

Puerto Montt, a seaport in southern Chile, has approximately 238.500 inhabitants and is the administrative centre of the Región de los Lagos. The capital of Chile, Santiago, is located 1.100km to the north. One of the most active volcanoes of Chile, the Calbuco, is located only 30km to the east. The last eruption occurred in 1961 (now in April 2015 he is again erupting).

In the area surrounding Puerto Montt 12.000 to 14.000 year old archaeological finds were discovered which are thought to be one of the oldest hints of human settlements on the American continent.

Probably the scenically most beautiful part is Puerto Varas (also called the city of roses), the Lago Llanguihue and surroundings, dominated by the two volcanoes Osorno and the smaller Calbuco. Puerto Varas is located approximately 20km to the north of Puerto Montt on the southern shore of the Llanquihue Lake and has about 33.000 inhabitants.

Puerto Montt, eine Hafenstadt im Süden Chiles, zählt ungefähr 238.500 Einwohner und ist das Verwaltungszentrum der Regíon de los Lagos. Die Hauptstadt Chiles, Santiago, liegt 1.100km nördlich der Stadt. Einer der aktivsten Vulkane des Landes, der Calbuco, befindet sich im Osten, in nur knapp 30km Entfernung. Der letzte Ausbruch ereignete sich 1961 (derzeit, im April 2015, bricht er gerade erneut aus).

In der Region um Puerto Montt wurden 12.000 bis 14.000 Jahre alte archäologische Funde entdeckt, die als eine der ältesten Hinweise auf menschliche Siedlungen auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent gelten.

Der landschaftlich schönste Teil ist hier wohl Puerto Varas (Stadt der Rosen), der Lago Llanquihue und Umgebung, die von den Vulkanen Osorno und (dem kleineren) Calbuco dominiert wird. Puerto Varas liegt an dem südlichen Ufer des Llanquihue-Sees, 20km nördlich von Puerto Montt und hat ungefähr 33.000 Einwohner.
