If divine advice was asked the oracle of Pythia entered a trance. The vague stammering issued through a small opening in the floor of the Temple of Apollo. There the priests were already waiting. They translated the cryptic answers into an understandable, but ambiguous prophecy and brought them to the persons seeking advice in front of the temple. The ambiguity of the oracles safeguarded the priests of any disproof. Because the questioners - also kings seeking advice - had to explain all their fears, hopes and plans prior to consult the oracle, the priests of Delphi belonged to the best-informed people in the ancient world.
Wenn göttlicher Rat gefragt war, versetzte sich das Orakel, die Pythia, in Trance. Das vage Gestammel drang durch eine kleine Öffnung im Boden des Apollontempels. Dort warteten die Priester. Sie übersetzten die kryptischen Antworten in eine verständliche, aber zweideutige Weissagung und überbrachten sie den Ratsuchenden vor dem Tempel. Die Zweideutigkeit der Orakelsprüche sicherte die Priester vor jeder Widerlegung ab. Weil die Fragesteller – auch die ratsuchenden Könige - all ihre Ängste, Planungen und Hoffnungen vor Befragung des Orakels darlegen mussten, gehörten die Priester von Delphi zu den bestinformierten Personen der Antike.
