The archaeological excavations in Old Paphos, 15 km from the royal tombs, explain the importance of the city-kingship in ancient times. There was a place of worship, where an oriental mother goddess was worshipped already 6000 years ago in the form of a black stone. Around 1200 BC the Mycenaeans from Greece inherited the sanctuary and declared the fertility goddess to be Aphrodite. Old Paphos became the centre of mysterious rites, in which the love goddess was offered sacrifices like incense, perfume and honey.
Warum das Stadtkönigtum in der Antike so bedeutend war, zeigt die Ausgrabung in Alt-Paphos, 15 km von den Königsgräbern entfernt. Dort lag ein Kultplatz, an dem schon vor 6000 Jahren eine orientalische Muttergottheit in Form eines schwarzen Steines verehrt wurde. Um 1200 v.d.Z. übernahmen die Mykener aus Griechenland das Heiligtum und bezeichneten die Fruchtbarkeitsgöttin als Aphrodite. Alt Paphos wurde zum Zentrum der sogenannten Aphrodisien, geheimnisvollen Riten, bei denen der Liebesgöttin Opfer in Form von Weihrauch, Parfum und Honig dargebracht wurden.
