With the division of Cyprus, the island's most important port, Famagusta, lost most of its importance. At the same time Limassol quickly became Southern Cyprus's largest transshipment point for foreign trade and now counts 240,000 inhabitants. The metropolis is situated in a particularly historical area. In the vicinity of Limassol, in Choirokoitia, the oldest settlement traces of the island were found. Also Greeks and Romans appreciated the location and founded an important settlement in Kourion.
Mit der Teilung Zyperns verlor der wichtigste Hafen der Insel, Famagusta, massiv an Bedeutung. Zugleich schlug die Stunde von Limassol, das schnell zu Südzyperns größtem Umschlagplatz für den Außenhandel aufstieg und heute 240.000 Einwohner zählt. Die Metropole liegt in einer besonders geschichtsträchtigen Gegend. In der Nähe Limassols hat man in Choirokoitia die ältesten Siedlungsspuren der Insel gefunden. Auch Griechen und Römer wussten den Standort zu schätzen und gründeten in Kourion eine wichtige Niederlassung.
