The strategic position of Cyprus at the intersection of the Orient and the Occident already awakened the interest of hunters and gatherers from the Middle East, probably the first settlers of the island, 11,000 years ago. Their sedentary descendants founded the settlement of Choirokoitia 10,000 years ago. The Neolithic village had about 1000 inhabitants and consisted of 50 stone circular huts with a diameter of up to 10 meters. A reconstruction demonstrates that the mud-walled houses were covered by a flat roof made of wooden beams and straw. There was a fire pit in the centre of the house. The dead were buried right under the floor of the dwellings to be close to their descendants. The tombs were full of precious jewellery. The analysis of skeletons showed that men reached the age of 35 years on average, one and a half years more than women!.
