Thick jungle surrounds the quiet Bannas valley in the Sanchahe Nature Reserve. Awestruck, one enters the valley, because here they live, those famous wild elephants, about 50 in number. There is even a strict ban on sounding one's horn on the surrounding streets to avoid disturbing the majestic calm - and, indeed - suddenly a deafening noise roars through the valley. Here they are at last - not fifty, not hundred, but thousands of them - but quite a different specimen of the genus 'homo touristicus chinesis', subgroup 'megaphonialis'. Hundreds of noisy tourist groups move through the forest in order not to miss the treetop gondola to the elephant show. Wild elephants are unlikely to be discovered, for if the shy animals were so masochistic as to show up here, they would have long since gone extinct. Therefore, there is only one thing left to do: the observation of the common Chinese tourist, who, however, provides a show at least as much impressive.
Dichter Dschungel umgibt das stille Bannas Tal im Sanchahe Naturschutzgebiet. Mit großer Ehrfurcht betritt man das Tal, denn hier leben sie, jene berühmten wilden Elefanten, etwa 50 an der Zahl. Auf den umliegenden Strassen besteht sogar striktes Hupverbot, um die majestätische Ruhe nicht zu stören – und tatsächlich – plötzlich dringt ein ohrenbetäubender Lärm durch das Tal. Endlich sind sie da – nicht 50, nicht hundert, nein tausende Vertreter – jedoch ganz anderer Trampeltiere der Gattung homo touristicus chinesis, Untergruppe megaphonialis. Hundertschaften von lärmenden Reisegruppen strömen im Laufschritt durch den Wald, um die Baumwipfelgondel zur Elefantenshow nicht zu versäumen. Wilde Elefanten sind wohl kaum zu entdecken, denn wären die scheuen Tiere so masochistisch veranlagt, sich gerade hier blicken zu lassen, wären sie wohl schon längst ausgestorben. So bleibt nur die Beobachtung des gemeinen chinesischen Touristen, der aber eine mindestens ebenso beeindruckende Show bietet.
