Washington State#
H. MaurerWith an area of 184.666 km2 Washington ranks as 18 th largest state in size, but by its population of 7 million it is at rank 13.
Touristically, the state is known because of the wild coast and rainforest of the Olympic peninsula , and a bit further East the Olympic range, mountains with large glaciers due to the very high precipitation as the winds from the Pacitfic rise up the mountain slopes sheddign their moisture. One of the most prominent and best known peaks is Mt. Rainier (3952 m), a stratovolcanic peak with a spectacular National Park. The mountain is visible from the capital of the state, Olympia. The coastal range of mountains is known especially also for Mount St. Helens (2500m high) that erupted in 1980.
The capital Olympia with a population of about 50.000 is by far not the largest city of the state: Seattle is. The Seattle Seattle metropolitan area has around 3.6 million inhabitants and is thus the 15th largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Seattle area developed as a technology center beginning in the 1980s. Boeing company chose Seattle as a center for aircraft manufacturing, companies like Microsoft became established in the region, and in 1994 the Internet retail giant Amazon was founded in Seattle. Pictures of Seattle are found separately.
