The foundation walls of the excavated Dongur Palace tell of the prosperous life of the Axumite upper class. In the vernacular it is called the Palace of the Queen of Sheba. Reconstructions show that the buildings were one to two-storey and had constant water. The imperial coronation in Axum followed a strict ritual that culminated in the killing of a lion and a buffalo by the aspirant to the throne's own hand. Thus he manifested his power. By cutting the hair and burning it by a priest, the person of the new emperor was especially consecrated.
