Despite its picaresque wood houses Mariefred would probably not have reached celebrity, if it hadn’t been for Gripsholm Castle, the embodiment of Swedish Romanticism. Built in the 16th century on the remainders of a much older castle complex, the new castle served as the inspiration for Kurt Tucholsky’s world famed novel “Schloss Gripsholm”. The German writer spend several months in Mariefred and is also buried there.
