The matador's sword thrust annually hits 12,000 animals at the age of 5-6 years. Absurd but true: Their meat - so it is required by a new EU regulation - is not for human consumption anymore. Since the times of BSE the spinal cord of the cattle is not to be injured at slaughter, a requirement which is naturally impossible to be observed in a bullfight. So every year 5000 tons of finest beef go to the carcass disposal - despite the fact that fighting bulls are, due to their origin and breeding, at least at rist to contain the pathogen within themselves. In any case, the bullfight will cause ferocious debates also in the future - cultural property or not. The Catalans already have brought themselves to a ban.
Der Dolchstoß des Matadors trifft alljährlich 12.000 Tiere im Alter von 5-6 Jahren. Skurril aber wahr: Ihr Fleisch – so verlangt es eine neue EU-Verordnung – steht nicht mehr zum Verzehr. Seit den Zeiten von BSE darf bei der Schlachtung von Rindern das Rückenmark nicht verletzt werden, eine Forderung, die beim Stierkampf naturgemäß nicht einzuhalten ist. So wandern alljährlich 5000 t feinstes Rindfleisch in die Tierkörperverwertung - ungeachtet der Tatsache, dass Kampfstiere aufgrund ihrer Herkunft und Aufzucht wohl am wenigsten gefährdet sind, den Erreger in sich zu tragen. Der Stierkampf wird jedenfalls auch in Zukunft heftige Diskussionen auslösen – Kulturgut hin oder her. Die Katalanen haben sich bereits zu einem Verbot durchgerungen.
