La Llanía pathway el hierro La Llania #

La Llanía pathway is one of the most popular on the island. In about two hour walk you can discover the wonderful contrasts which El Hierro has to offer.

El Brezal, a thick damp forest takes you to pathways full of ferns which lead to softer bare lands and the black sands of one of the best preserved craters on the island which is prior to the majestic landscape of el Golfo. This is a seven kilometre circular route full of beauty and magic.

Garoé. the holy tree el hierro Garoé Árbol Santo #

El Garoé, the holy tree is situated in the north oft the island (Garoé Árbol Santo). It is a symbol of the island which represents the fought of the Bimbaches (ancient inhabitants of El Hierro)to preserve a constant supply of water. El Garoé condensed the water form the Trade winds, for the water to be deposited in water tanks for animals and humans to sate their thirsts. Now it is possible to visit an interpretation centre that allow people to understand better the natural phenomenon of horizontal rain together with the archaeological and cultural riches of this mythical place. The leaves were once capable of collecting enough water to supply the whole population of the island, a fact that earned it a reputation as a sacred tree.

Husbandry in the South#

In the south of the island the people live from husbandry and agriculture. Everywhere you can see unguarded sheeps or goats. If you look closer, you can see their feets bounded with loose rope to prevent them from skipping the place.
