Professional pilgrims were quite usual who did the journey in place of the rich or invalids. Also delinquents were condemned to expiate their sins by going on pilgrimage. For most hikers a vow or the remission of sins was the most important motivation for the exhausting journey into the unknown.
Gang und gäbe waren Berufspilger, die stellvertretend für Reiche oder Gebrechliche die Reise antraten. Auch Straffällige wurden zum Abbüßen ihrer Sünden zur Wallfahrt verdammt. Für die meisten Wanderer bildete ein Gelübde oder ein Sündenerlass die wichtigste Motivation für die strapaziöse Reise ins Ungewisse.
