Valletta Valletta, Malta , the capital of Malta is located in the central-eastern part of the island of Malta and has a population of approximately 6.700. On the eastern coast of the peninsula of Valletta lies the Marsamxett Harbour and on the western coast the Grand Harbour. Valletta is the second southernmost capital of the EU member states after Nicosia, Cyprus.
The oldest buildings date from the 16th century, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Essentially the city is Baroque in character, with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture in selected areas, though World War II left major scars on the city. In 1980 the City of Valletta was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
