Zittau - Church of the Holy Cross#

The city of Zittau Zittau is located in the far south-east of Saxony, in the tri-border region with Poland and the Czech Republic. According to the legend, King Ottokar II of Bohemia circuited in 1255 the city with his horse and thus defined the limits of its walls. Due to the new definition of the frontiers in 1945, the once prosperous city was now marginalized into a geographically and economically remote region. Among the sights of the city especially the Church of the Holy Cross is worth mentioning. Built around 1410, it is considered to be the largest and highest church, whose vault is supported by a single column placed in its centre and the exterior walls, in Germany. After its destruction during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt with late Gothic and early Baroque interior.
