With absolutism, which concentrated all state power in the hands of the monarch, court life experienced an unprecedented display of splendour. State corporatism had had its day, and so the ruler by the grace of God tried to bind them by the luxurious court life. Generous donations increased their dependency. The common man became a villein who was bound to socage service. This form of government, which had a firm hold on Europe from the 16th to the 18th century, peaked with the famous dictum of Louis XIV of France: 'L'état, c'est moi' (I am the State).

Mit dem Absolutismus, der alle staatliche Gewalt in den Händen des Monarchen konzentriert, erlebte das Hofleben eine nie dagewesene Prachtentfaltung. Der Ständestaat hatte ausgedient und so versuchte der durch Gottes Gnade absolut regierende Herrscher, Adel und Klerus durch das luxuriöse Leben am Hof an sich zu binden. Großzügige Schenkungen steigerten das Abhängigkeitsverhältnis. Alle Normalbürger wurden gleichsam zu Leibeigenen, die Fronarbeit zu leisten hatten. Seinen Höhepunkt erlebte diese Regierungsform, die Europa vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert fest im Griff hatte, mit dem berühmten Ausspruch von Frankreichs König Ludwig dem XIV: „Der Staat bin ich“.
