Most of the barn roof churches are foundations of ordinary farmers, landowners, noblemen, or even the Byzantine emperor himself. They are used for liturgy only on the saint's day of their respective saint. Like the church of Stavros tou Agiasmati, many of the churches are only open to visitors by locating the local priest who has the key.
Bei den meisten Scheunenkirchen handelt es sich um Stiftungen von einfachen Bauern, Großgrundbesitzern, Adeligen oder sogar dem Kaiser von Byzanz höchstpersönlich. Sie werden nur am Namenstag ihres jeweiligen Heiligen für eine Liturgie genutzt. So wie die Agiasmati-Kirche sind viele Gotteshäuser Besuchern nur zugänglich, wenn man den örtlichen Priester mit dem Schlüssel ausfindig macht.
