Agios Neophytos Monastery#

A little mischief made Saint Neophytos a hermit. His travel fund was stolen. Poor as a church mouse, he saw his plight as a sign of the Lord. As a place for his enclave he chose a well at the end of a wooded valley north of Paphos. There he levered out a cave from the rock with simple tools and stayed for 65 long years. In the course of time the hermitage developed into a large monastery for the supposedly most scholared monks of the island.
Ein kleines Missgeschick machte den Heiligen Neophytos zum Einsiedler. Man hatte ihm seine Reisekasse gestohlen. Arm wie eine Kirchenmaus sah er seine Notlage als einen Wink des Herrn. Als Ort für seine Enklave wählte er eine Quelle am Ausgang eines bewaldeten Tales nördlich von Paphos. Dort schlug er mit einfachen Werkzeugen eine Höhle in den Felsen und blieb für 65 lange Jahre. Im Laufe der Zeit entstand aus der Einsiedelei eine große Klosteranlage, in der die angeblich gelehrtesten Mönche der Insel wohnen.
