Exactly at the place of a cross-in-square church once stood a highly revered column, where Paul the apostle was flagellated 39 times during his first missionary trip. The Orthodox church stands in the middle of an early Christian basilica of monumental proportions, which already in 653 fell a victim to an Arab attack.
Genau an jener Stelle, wo sich heute eine Kreuzkuppelkirche erhebt, ragte eine hochverehrte Säule auf, an der Apostel Paulus während seiner ersten Missionsreise 39 mal gegeißelt wurde. Das orthodoxe Gotteshaus steht inmitten einer frühchristlichen Basilika von monumentalen Ausmaßen, die bereits im Jahr 653 einem arabischen Angriff zum Opfer fiel.
