At the gates of the ancient city lies a unique necropolis dating back 3000 years when Salamis held the status of a capital among the Cypriot municipalities. Accordingly, its king was important and therefore his tomb had to be correspondingly elaborate. A broad access road led to an atrium followed by the actual burial chamber. In front of the tomb huge pyres were erected to sacrifice the draught animals of the funeral vehicle. The king was also given a ritual cremation. In the burial chamber the urn was laid to rest together with countless funerary goods. This suggests that one believed in after-life.
Vor den Toren der antiken Stadt liegt eine einzigartige Nekropole aus der Zeit vor 3000 Jahren, als Salamis unter den zypriotischen Stadtkönigtümern den Status einer Hauptstadt innehatte. Entsprechend bedeutend war der hiesige Stadtkönig und entsprechend aufwändig musste seine Grabanlage sein. Ein breiter Zugangsweg führte zu einem Vorhof, an den sich die eigentliche Grabkammer anschloss. Vor dem Grabmal errichtete man riesige Scheiterhaufen, auf denen die Zugtiere des Leichenwagens verbrannt wurden. Auch der König erhielt eine rituelle Feuerbestattung. In der Grabkammer fand die Urne zusammen mit unzähligen Grabbeigaben ihre letzte Ruhe. Das lässt darauf schließen, dass man an ein jenseitiges Weiterleben glaubte.
