Titans

Long ago, the god of the heavens Uranos and his wife, the earth goddess Gaia, procreated 12 children, giants in human shape who were to rule the earth as titans. But Uranos hated his brood and pushed them back into Gaia's womb. But she knew how to defend herself. She created a sickle with sharp teeth and gave it to Kronos, the most courageous of her sons to castrate his father, but he was catapulted into the sea by the severed genital. White foam issued from the water, from which finally a girl arose: Aphrodite, 'risen from the foam'. First she swam to Kythera, but took little pleasure in the bleak island and turned to Cyprus. There she rose naked and in perfect beauty from the shell which had washed her ashore on the south coast of Cyprus. She became the love goddess of the Greeks, won all beauty contests against Hera and Athena, and from then on was only seen at the side of Eros, the god of love and Himeros, his lookalike representing desire and unrequited love. And it is believed that she is still living even today somewhere in Cyprus, she, Aphrodite, the tutelary goddess of Cyprus, the most beautiful of all beauties.
