The sanctuary also included a palaestra, a sporting training centre - preferably for wrestlers and boxers. From the 5th century BC onwards the palaestra became a humanistic educational institution under the name of 'Gymnasion', where sporting and physical as well as intellectual education took place. The athletes always trained naked and rubbed their bodies with olive oil. In Greek, 'naked' means 'gymnos'. The term 'gymnasium' derivates from it.
