They are little-known in the Western world, although they blew on the coals of knowledge and fanned the intellectual flames at a time when Europe descended into the dark age. The mathematician Al-Khorezmi coined the terms algorithm and algebra. Already 500 years before Copernicus, the astronomer Al-Biruni taught that the earth circles around the sun and calculated the distance between earth and moon correct to 20 km. Also some famous physicians lived in Khorezm. The medical book of Abu Ali ibn Sina was used also in Europe as a standard work of medicine until the 17th century.
Sie sind in der westlichen Welt kaum bekannt, obwohl sie in einer Zeit, als Europa im finsteren Mittelalter versank, die Glut des Wissens zu einem intellektuellen Feuer entfachten. Der Mathematiker Al-Khorezmi prägte die Begriffe Algorithmus und Algebra. Bereits 500 Jahre vor Kopernikus lehrte der Astronom Al-Biruni, dass sich die Erde um die Sonne dreht und berechnete den Abstand Erde-Mond auf 20 km genau. Auch berühmte Ärzte lebten damals in Khorezm. Das Fachbuch von Abu Ali ibn Sina galt bis ins 17. Jahrhundert auch in Europa als Standardwerk der Medizin.
