Only a few mausolea and minarets recall the once-glorious glory. The city was not only a fabulously rich trading centre. In the Islamic colleges, the so-called Madrasa, the most famous scholars of the time worked as instructors - teaching mainly natural sciences, geography and medicine. In the air of a cosmopolitan Islam, Central Asia produced from the 9th to the 11th century some of the greatest thinkers in history.
Nur wenige Mausoleen und Minarette erinnern an den einstigen Glanz. Die Stadt war nicht nur ein sagenhaft reiches Handelszentrum. In den islamischen Hochschulen, den Medresen, unterrichteten die berühmtesten Gelehrten der damaligen Zeit – vor allem Naturwissenschaften, Geographie und Medizin. Im Klima eines weltoffenen Islam brachte Zentralasien vom 9 bis zum 11. Jahrhundert einige der größten Denker der Geschichte hervor.
