Later on, Nicholas was raised in the Russian Orthodox Church to the patron saint of seafarers and travellers. Therefore, it is not surprising that the alleged sarcophagus of the saint in the Church of St. Nicholas at Myra is still a popular pilgrimage destination for Russian Christians. In fact, the remains were transferred in the 11th century to Bari in Italy.
Später stieg Nikolaus in der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche zum Schutzpatron der Seefahrer und Reisenden auf. Daher verwundert es nicht, dass der angebliche Sarkophag des Heiligen in der Nikolaus-Basilika von Myra immer noch ein beliebtes Pilgerziel für russische Christen darstellt. Tatsächlich wurden die Gebeine im 11. Jahrhundert ins italienische Bari überführt.
