Gymnasium and baths spread in the lower city. In antiquity, Arykanda was not only known for its prime location, but also for its extravagance. Testimonia report on wild orgies that almost led to bankruptcy. Therefore, they allied the Diadoch Antiochus in 197 BC in his battle against the Ptolemies - not for power political reasons, but simply to keep the creditors at bay. This is how Lycian cities solved their financial crises.
Gymnasion und Thermen breiteten sich in der Unterstadt aus. In der Antike war Arykanda nicht nur für ihre Traumlage bekannt, sondern auch für ihre Verschwendungssucht. Historische Quellen berichten von wilden Orgien, die beinahe zum Staatsbankrott geführt hätten. So schloss man sich 197 v.d.Z. dem Diadochen Antiochos im Kampf gegen die Ptolemäer an, nicht etwa aus machtpolitischen Gründen, sondern schlicht und einfach, um sich die Gläubiger vom Hals zu halten. So lösten lykische Städte ihre Finanzkrisen.
