The adjacent pillar sarcophagus is hollowed out and used as a burial chamber. Centuries later, another stone coffin was placed onto the flat roof. However, Xanthos was bereft of its greatest attraction in the 19th century. Today, the magnificent Nereid Monument is in the British Museum in London. Archaeologists suspect that this funerary temple served as a model for the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the (Ancient) World.
Auch der benachbarte Pfeilersarkophag ist innen hohl und als Grabkammer genutzt. Auf das Flachdach stellte man Jahrhunderte später einen weiteren Steinsarg. Seiner größten Attraktion wurde Xanthos jedoch im 19. Jahrhundert beraubt. Das prachtvolle Nereidenmonument steht heute im britischen Museum in London. Archäologen vermuten, dass dieser Grabtempel als Vorbild für das Mausoleum des Halikarnassos diente, eines der sieben Weltwunder der Antike.
