Only ruins are left proclaiming the phenomenal resplendence of the city in the desert. The supreme god of Palmyra was worshipped at the sacred site of Baal, the biggest temple in the city. Baal was idolised in different manifestations according to the mixture of people. Often he was equalised with Marduk, the supreme god of the Babylonians, the Assyrian weather god Hadad or even the father of the gods Zeus.
Zurück blieben Ruinen, die bis heute vom überragenden Glanz der Wüstenstadt künden. Im größten Tempel, dem Baal-Heiligtum, wurde dem obersten Gott Palmyras gehuldigt. Gemäß dem Völkergemisch der Stadt verehrte man Baal in unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen. Oft wurde er mit Marduk, dem Hauptgott der Babylonier, mit dem assyrischen Wettergott Hadad oder sogar mit Göttervater Zeus gleichgesetzt.
