The trading city Lijiang lies on a 2500 m high plateau, overshadowed by the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. It is the centre of the Naxi minority, which, with 300,000 people, is one of the smaller ethnic groups in China. Originally, the maternalistic Naxi originate from Tibet. From there they brought their shamanic Bon religion with them, which in the course of time was commingled with Buddhism and Taoism. This eventuated in the very complex Dongba religion. Particularly noteworthy is the Naxi script, developed by Dongba priests in the 13th century. The semiotic system consists of 1400 pictograms and is the world's only hieroglyphic script still in use.
