Even though the Burmese are exceptionally friendly and tolerant, visitors still should stick to a few basic rules of conduct, for example the rule of height: The head is the holiest, the feet the dirties part of the body. Therefore, it is taboo to touch a person’s head with your hands. This applies to children as well. As a greeting people smile at each other. The Burmese avoid hand shaking for reasons of hygiene.
