Despite the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon the metropolis Mandalay is considered the cultural center of the country since the 19th century. At that time the legendary king Mindon relocated his capital from Amarapura only 5 km away. In 1857 a dream had motivated the ruler to do so. All inhabitants had to follow him under the thread of the death penalty. And indeed: Mindon lead to Great-Burmese empire to its last magnificent bloom. He introduced a coin system, fostered his ministerial council, even allowed contradictions and kept good relationships with the British and the French. Until the British conquest in 1885 Mandalay developed into a flourishing craft center and an architectural figurehead. The showpiece is the Mahamuni Pagoda with the most venerated Buddha statue of the country.
