The World Golf Hall of Fame was originally located in Pinehurst, North Carolina 35.196111,-79.464167 , and was operated privately until the PGA of America (Professional Golfers' Association of America) took over management in 1983 and acquired full ownership in 1986. The current Hall of Fame is a product of merging two other halls in 1998, namely The Hall of Fame of Women's Golf (or later LPGA Tour Hall of Fame) and The World Golf Hall of Fame. The global golf industry established a non-profit making body called the World Golf Foundation to promote the sport, with the creation of an enhanced Hall of Fame as one of its main objectives, in 1994. In 1996 construction at the St. Augustine site began and the new facility opened on May 19, 1998.
