The monument was built in remembrance of Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese seafarer. Magellan sailed on behalf of the Spanish crown and was the first person attempting to circumnavigate the world. He failed because he was killed during the voyage.
Das Denkmal wurde zu Ehren Ferdinand Magellans, einem portugiesischen Seefahrer, errichtet. Magellan segelte im Auftrag der spanischen Krone und plante als Erster eine Weltumsegelung, die er allerdings nicht beenden konnte, da er unterwegs getötet wurde.
