Punta Arenas #

During the remainder of the 1800s, Punta Arenas grew in size and importance due to the increasing maritime traffic and trade traveling to the west coasts of South and North America. This period of growth also resulted from the waves of European immigrants... attracted to the gold rush and sheep farming boom in the 1880s and early 1900s. The largest sheep company, controlling 10,000 square kilometres in Chile and Argentina, was based in Punta Arenas, and its owners lived there. The geopolitical importance of Punta Arenas has remained high in the 20th and 21st centuries because of its logistic importance in accessing the Antarctic Peninsula."
Punta Arenas is used by cruise ships both as southernmost point of their cruise, and by others as a starting point to take a cruise south to or around cape Horn.
Die deutsche Wikipedia sagt u.a.: "Punta Arenas diente zunächst als Strafkolonie, später dann als Freihafen, der durch die Entdeckung von Steinkohle (1872) und die Einführung von Schafen durch Engländer immer wichtiger wurde. Im Jahr 1875 betrug die Einwohnerzahl erst 915, im Jahr 1884 bereits 4.000 und es gab in 16 Estancias 40.000 Schafe, 6.000 Rinder und 2.000 Pferde. Die Magellanstraße überblickend, war die Stadt Station einer der wichtigsten Handelsstraßen der Erde... Nach der Eröffnung des Panamakanals verlor der Hafen seine Bedeutung, jedoch kam gerade rechtzeitig die zweite Aufbruchsstimmung der Stadt, als sie Chiles Zentrum für den Wollhandel wurde."
Punta Arenas wird heute oft von Kreuzfahrten angelaufen, die die Stadt als südlichsten Punkt der Kreuzfahrt sehen, oder umgekehrt gerade hier den Start eine Kreuzfahrt nach Süden um Kap Horn herum beginnen.
