Next to the Capitol and the forum stood the basilica, a magnificent building where court hearings took place. Only in the course of later Christianization the term meant a church building designed according to the architectural model of the ancient courthouses and market halls.
Direkt an Kapitol und Forum schloss die Basilika an, ein Prachtgebäude, in dem Gerichtsverhandlungen stattfanden. Erst im Zuge der späteren Christianisierung übertrug sich der Begriff auf Kirchenbauten, die nach dem architektonischen Vorbild der antiken Gerichtsgebäude und Markthallen gestaltet wurden.
