Teff#

Teff is the maincrop, an ancient bread cereal, existing only in Ethiopia and belonging to the millet family. The tiny, hardly 1 mm large seed grains are worth remarking. A team of oxen helps with the threshing of the grain. Once, the farmland belonged to a kind of clan, several extended families with common ancestors. The sites were issued to the members of the clan for cultivation. Today, all land belongs to the Ethiopian state according to the constitution. There is no private ownership. This is to prevent feudal structures and large scale land-holding. The peasants have a hereditary legal right of use for their soils, but they are not allowed to use them as bank security or to sub-lease them. Therefore, they are hardly interested in sustainable land use or in investments.

Hauptanbauprodukt ist Teff, ein nur in Äthiopien vorkommendes uraltes Brotgetreide, das zur Familie der Hirse gehört. Auffällig sind die winzigen, kaum 1 mm großen Samenkörner. Ochsengespanne helfen beim Dreschen des Getreides. Einst gehörte der Ackerboden jeweils einer Art Klan, mehreren Großfamilien mit gemeinsamen Ahnen. Die Gründe wurden den Mitgliedern zur Bewirtschaftung zugeteilt. Heute gehört laut Verfassung alles Land dem äthiopischen Staat. Privatbesitz gibt es nicht. Damit will man feudale Strukturen und Großgrundbesitz unterbinden. Die Bauern haben zwar ein erbliches Nutzungsrecht für ihre Böden, dürfen dieses aber weder als Banksicherheit einsetzen noch weiter verpachten. Daher besteht auch wenig Interesse an nachhaltiger Bewirtschaftung oder gar an Investitionen.
