The old cathedral of Axum stands on the foundations of the first church of Ethiopia from the 4th century. Only accessible to men, it at first served as the storage place for the Ark of the Covenant. The cult around these fabulous Tablets of Stone, in historical terms a pure myth, became the core of the Ethiopian church.
Die alte Kathedrale von Axum steht auf den Fundamenten der ersten Kirche Äthiopiens aus dem 4. Jahrhundert. Nur Männern zugänglich, diente sie ursprünglich als Aufbewahrungsort der Bundeslade. Der Kult um diese legendären Gesetzestafeln, die historisch betrachtet ein reiner Mythos sind, wurde zum Kern der äthiopischen Kirche.
