Common Crocodile#

For 250 million years, the crocodilians inhabit their terrestrial haunt. Together with the birds they form the last descendants of the dinosaurs. Genetically they are more closely related to birds than any other reptiles. Many African people consider crocodiles as sacred animals and offer them sacrifices. In the form of the crocodile god Sobek the saurian even made it into the pantheon of the ancient Egyptians.
Seit 250 Millionen Jahren bevölkern die Panzerechsen die irdischen Lebensräume. Sie bilden – zusammen mit den Vögeln – die letzten Nachkommen der Saurier. Genetisch sind sie mit den Vögeln näher verwandt als mit allen anderen Reptilien. Viele afrikanische Völker betrachten Krokodile als heilige Tiere und bringen ihnen Opfer dar. In Form des Krokodilgottes Sobek schaffte es die Echse sogar in den Pantheon der Alten Ägypter.
