This requires a strictly regulated hierarchy between ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, as well as younger and older brother. This must, according to Confucius, be characterized by obedience to the superiors and benevolence towards the lower. In addition to this absolute loyalty also ancestor worship and respect for the rites are among the three social duties of every human being. This means a strictly formalized behavior, etiquette and moral law that govern every aspect of life - from toddlers to emperor. The life of the individual must always be subordinated to the common welfare and the national interest - a system that continues to characterize China to the present day.
Dazu bedarf es einer streng geregelten Hierarchie zwischen Herrscher und Untertan, Vater und Sohn, Mann und Frau sowie jüngerem und älterem Bruder. Diese müsse, so Konfuzius, durch Gehorsam gegenüber dem Höhergestellten und Wohlwollen gegenüber dem Niederen geprägt sein. Zu den drei sozialen Pflichten jedes Menschen gehören neben dieser bedingungslosen Loyalität auch die Ahnenverehrung und die Wahrung der Riten. Gemeint ist damit ein streng formalisiertes Verhalten, Regeln von Anstand und Sitte, die alle Lebensbereiche bestimmen – vom Kleinkind bis zum Kaiser. Das Leben des Individuums sollte immer dem Gemeinwohl und dem Staatsinteresse unterstellt sein – ein System, das China bis heute prägt.
