Jarlshof#

The earliest evidence of habitation at Jarlshof Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement, Shetland, ... is dated with 2.700 BC. The remains of buildings from a period of 2500 BC to 1600 AD can be seen at the site. It was a good place to settle as the shallow coast offered excellent harbourage, the land around the promontory had fertile ground for arable farming and grazing, fresh water was found at nearby springs and flat building stones were abundantly available.
In this picture the laird's house and the new hall can be seen. They are the youngest structures at Jarlshof and date from 1592. In the front remains of buildings from the bronze-age to the iron-age can be seen.
