At home, an equestrian statue of the cavalier, just in front of the Church of San Martin, honours him as a great son of the city, but it should rather be regarded as a warning symbol for an unfortunate series of poverty, vanity, and fanatical faith. Anyway, all his life he could not only count on the blessing, but also on the energetic support of the Church. It was not to be to their disadvantage. Not only did the Church recruit numerous new parishioners by force under cruel conditions. A considerable part of the treasures of the New World flowed into the grand expansions of its houses of God, into golden altars and - probably not too stingy - into the private purses of the church fathers.
