The most direct descendants of "Proto-Europeans" always lived in the provinces of the Basque Country Spain, Basque Country , Navarra Spain, Navarra and in the western foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France. In general, the subsequent history of Spain was only marginally affected by them. Even when the Romans made the Iberian Peninsula their province Hispania in the 3rd century BC., the new rulers came to terms with the Basques without significant struggles. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Visigoths took over, followed by the Muslim Moors who as of 711 occupied large parts of the Iberian Peninsula, coming from North Africa. The militant Basque people were more or less left alone.
