Even the most famous charioteer ever, the Lusitanian Gaius Diocles, a kind of Michael Schumacher of the ancient world, earned his first spurs Mérida's racecourse. A race took 7 rounds and the winner was promised a high award. The Megastars were managed by the so-called Factiones, similar to a nowaday's Formula I racing team, and a multi-million-dollar business even then. A historian has recalculated it once: not Tiger Woods, but Caius Diocles is the richest athlete ever. On the basis of today's value the charioteer earned about 15 billion dollars, as much as the costs for the entire Roman army for 3 months.
Sogar der berühmtestes Wagenlenker aller Zeiten, der Lusitanier Gaius Diocles, eine Art Michael Schumacher der Antike, verdiente sich seine ersten Sporen in der Rennbahn von Mérida. 7 Runden dauerte ein Rennen und dem Sieger winkten hohe Prämien. Gemanaget wurden die Megastars von sogenannten Factiones, Formel 1-Rennställen nicht unähnlich und schon damals ein Multimillionengeschäft. Ein Historiker hat nachgerechnet: nicht Tiger Woods, sondern Caius Diocles war der reichste Sportler aller Zeiten. Auf heutigen Wert umgerechnet verdiente der Wagenlenker rund 15 Mrd. Dollar, soviel, wie die gesamte römische Armee in 3 Monaten kostete.
