owes its prosperity and wealth to the Way of St James. In the 11th century the town even became the residence of the kings of Navarre. Between the 9th and 16th century the largely independent kingdom of Navarre ruleld over the western Pyrenees. A feudal royal palace and mighty churches still bear witness to the former importance of the town.
