Almost a million people make Bilbao the largest metropolis of northern Spain. The ore mines in the surrounding mountains and the shipbuilding led the city to prosperity in the 19th century. The port was one of the busiest in Europe then. Bilbao became the most important industrial base of Spain. With the crisis of the iron and steel industry in the 1970s came the decline of this "Spanish Ruhr Area". Left over were industrial ruins and a wasteland of impersonal residential blocks. Those who were not traveling for business, steered clear of the city.
Fast eine Million Menschen machen Bilbao zur größten Metropole Nordspaniens. Die Eisenerzminen der umliegenden Berge und der Schiffsbau verhalfen der Stadt im 19. Jahrhundert zu einer Blütezeit. Der Hafen gehörte damals zu den meist frequentierten Europas. Bilbao mauserte sich zum wichtigsten Industriestandort Spaniens. Mit der Krise der Stahl- und Metallindustrie in den 1970er Jahren begann der Niedergang dieses „spanischen Ruhrgebietes“. Zurück blieben Industrieruinen und gesichtslose Wohnblockwüsten. Wer hier nicht geschäftlich zu tun hatte, machte einen großen Bogen um die Stadt.
