Next to it, the insignificant building of the stock exchange hardly suggests that Malta's financial economy is built on sand. The total assets of the domestic banks exceeds the gross domestic product by a factor of eight because the island enjoys the reputation of being a tax haven for international investors and hedge funds. Officially there is a tax rate of 35%. In fact, however, only 5% of them are left by all sorts of tricks. But apparently, the gambler mentality comes naturally to the islanders. Nowhere else you can get so easily licenses for cyber casinos and bets, hardly anywhere else gambling and lotteries are as popular as here.
Gleich nebenan lässt das unscheinbare Gebäude der Börse kaum erahnen, dass Maltas Finanzwirtschaft auf tönernen Beinen steht. Die Bilanzsumme der einheimischen Banken übersteigt das Bruttoinlandsprodukt um das Achtfache, denn die Insel genießt den Ruf eines Steuerparadieses für internationale Investoren und Hedgefonds. Offiziell gilt ein Steuersatz von 35%. Tatsächlich aber bleiben davon durch allerlei Tricks real nur 5% übrig. Doch anscheinend liegt die Zockermentalität den Inselbewohnern im Blut. Nirgendwo erhält man so leicht Lizenzen für Online Casinos und Wetten, kaum anderswo sind Glücksspiel und Lotterien so beliebt wie hier.
