The tidal-free 'Grand Harbor', reaching four kilometres inland, was of crucial importance for all the Maltese potentates, a hub for the Mediterranean navigation and thus a first-rate trading centre. Especially in the 19th century the natural harbour boomed with the completion of the Suez Canal. Now every ship that came from India was sailing via Malta. Today the customs-free port is one of the largest of the Mediterranean.
Der gezeitenfreie 'Grand Harbour', der vier Kilometer ins Landesinnere reicht, war für alle Machthaber Maltas von entscheidender Bedeutung, ein Knotenpunkt der Mittelmeerschiffahrt und damit ein Handelszentrum ersten Ranges. Einen besonderen Aufschwung erlebte der Naturhafen im 19. Jahrhundert mit der Fertigstellung des Suezkanals. Nun fuhr auch jedes Schiff, das aus Indien kam, über Malta. Heute zählt der Zollfreihafen zu den größten des Mittelmeers.
