The citadel of Rabat sits on a hilltop above the city. It should protect the long-suffering islanders from the numerous pirate raids. But it did not always fulfil its task. In 1551, Sinan Pasha, a Turkish pirate, won the fortress, deported all 6,000 inhabitants of Gozo to Tripoli and sold them there as slaves. What remained was a depopulated island.
Die Zitadelle von Rabat thront auf einer Hügelkuppe über der Stadt. Sie sollte die leidgeprüften Inselbewohner vor den zahlreichen Piratenüberfällen beschützen. Doch nicht immer wurde sie ihrer Aufgabe gerecht. 1551 eroberte Sinan Pascha, ein türkischer Freibeuter, die Festung, verschleppte alle 6000 Einwohner Gozos nach Tripoli und ließ sie dort als Sklaven verkaufen. Zurück blieb eine entvölkerte Insel.
