Almost all Maltese avow themselves a Catholic. Relative to the population there are more priests, monks and nuns in Malta than in any other country in the world. The Maltese poet Alof de Wignacourt got to the heart of it: 'Malta would be an enchanting island if every priest was a tree.' The quotation does not sound so absurd, if one knows that the Catholic Church is still Malta's most important landowner. Even today, most of the island's ceremonies have a religious background. Every year at Easter, the religious variety of an exceptional state befalls the Maltese. In the evening of Good Friday, endless processions in historical robes re-enact the Passion of Christ. The procession in Zejtun Zejtun, Malta is particularly bombastic.
