Das antike Taras muss eine prachtvolle Stadt gewesen sein. Chronisten schwärmten in höchsten Tönen von der wichtigsten Handelsmetropole der griechischen Kolonien. Doch das ist 2500 Jahre her. Die heutige 200.000-Einwohnerstadt Taranto Taranto, Italy wird ihrem Ruf nicht mehr annähernd gerecht. Einen Hauch antiker Pracht erhascht man nur noch in Metaponto. Dort stehen 15 Säulen eines 2600 Jahre alten dorischen Tempels. Geweiht war er Apollon, dem Gott des Frühlings, der Heilung, des Lichtes und der Musik.

Ancient Taras must have been a magnificent city. Chroniclers raved of the main commercial metropolis of the Greek colonies in the highest tones. But that was 2500 years ago. Today's Taranto Taranto, Italy , a city of 200,000 inhabitants, does no longer uphold its reputation and a touch of ancient splendor can only be found in Metaponto. There 15 pillars of a 2600-year-old Doric temple can still be visited. The temple was dedicated to Apollon, the god of spring, of healing, light and music.
