Im Inneren des Gotteshaus sollte man den Blick ausnahmsweise nicht gen Himmel zur prachtvollen Holzdecke richten, sondern demutsvoll senken, denn der wahre Schatz der Kathedrale befindet sich am Boden, oder besser gesagt, bildet den Boden. 600.000 Kalksteinchen formen ein riesiges Mosaik – 800 m² groß. In den Darstellungen vermischen sich Szenen aus dem alten Testament mit antiken Mythen und Fabelwesen. Das überdimensionale Bilderbuch ist das Werk eines einzigen Künstlers, geschaffen vom griechischen Priester Pantaleone Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts in nur zweijähriger Arbeit. Es zeigt drei Lebensbäume von der Schöpfung bis zum jüngsten Gericht. Viele der Motive und Symbole sind heute nicht mehr eindeutig zu klären.
In the church, one should not turn one's eyes up to heaven at the glorious wooden ceiling, but humbly look down, for the true treasure of the cathedral is to be found on the ground, or rather, it forms the floor. 600,000 small stones form a huge mosaic - 800 m² in size. The depictions mix scenes from the Old Testament with ancient myths and mythical creatures. The oversized picture book is the work of one single artist, created by the Greek priest Pantaleone in the middle of the 12th century in just two years. It shows three Trees of Life, from Creation to the Last Judgment. Today, many of the motifs and symbols can no longer be construed.
